Johnny Knoxville on his Directing Stint
With Roger Alan Wade’s Video
The First Time I Saw Waylon
Posted: December 16th, 2008 at 3:03 pm | By: Johnny Knoxville
My cousin Roger Alan Wade wrote a very personal song about his hero, Waylon Jennings, and he recorded it where he has recorded most every song he has ever written — in my living room. Most all the Jackass guys were there to watch him do it, too. If they know Rog’ is recording and they are in town, the boys will be there.
They worship Roger the same way I do.
Anyway, reminding Roger that his mom and my mom are sisters, I asked him if I could direct the video for the song. Luckily,
he said yes, and I told him Dimitry (Elyaskevich — Jackass producer, director of photography and, most of all,
friend) and I would be traveling to Chattanooga within a week to shoot it. What we were going to shoot, though, I had no idea.
I believe the initial idea was … Hell, I can’t even remember the initial idea. I do recall that the video took
shape in my head when Roger’s daughter Shandy (thanks, Shandy) told me she had all this Super 8 footage of her father
from the ‘70s. I then formed a partial idea for what we were going to do, borrowed a Super 8 camera from my friend Lance
Bangs (thanks, Lance), and Dimitry and I flew off to Chattanooga to shoot. I think the video cost me about $63 dollars to
shoot. Dimitry did it for free, and we got the tape stock for free. I think the only costs I incurred were Wendy’s hamburgers,
a portable CD player used for playback of the song, and beer. Let me tell you, this video could have cost ALOOOOTTTT more,
but Shooter Jennings gave us the previously unseen footage of his father in this video for free. For FREE!!! It was such a sweet sweet thing to
do, and Roger and I will never forget it.

When you do videos quick and on the cheap, I highly recommend you have a great song to go along with it, and in this case,
we did. I also recommend you have very creative, easygoing people to work with, as well. I want to thank Dimitry for busting
his butt once again out of his love for Roger and me. And Jeff and Spike for their creative input, as always. I want to thank
my girlfriend Naomi for her complete love and support. A big, big thank you to Seth Casriel for his friendship and for doing
a beautiful job editing this video for practically nothing. Thank you to my pal Cody Hixon of Knoxville, Tenn., for procuring
the Waylon replica guitar used in the video, and also thanks for the beautiful leatherwork you did on it. Roger
and I also owe a huge thanks to Shooter Jennings for giving us the footage. We are still blown away by your kindness. Thanks
to Jay Frank and everyone at CMT for playing this and, most of all, thank you, Rog’. You
wrote a beautiful song, and I love you very much.
Sincerely,
Johnny Knoxville

NASHVILLE SKYLINE: Savoring a Few of the Good Things That 2008 Brought
Some Usual Suspects and Some Not So Usual
December 18, 2008; Written by Chet Flippo
Bad as 2008 may now seem in retrospect, we are daily assured by the "experts" that things will surely only get worse. But
not everything in the past year went all to hell. In music, at least, there were some bright spots and even a few inspiring
moments. Here are some of my favorite things from 2008:
• Miranda Lambert on the CMA Awards show singing a stripped-down and plaintively effective version of "More Like Her." Lambert is a refreshingly
no-nonsense singer and songwriter who does her bidness her way and doesn't need any of your crap.
• Randy Travis' album Around the Bend. The song "From Your Knees" is a knock-you-down stunner, but I think the real sleeper on the
album is the much more subtle cut "Dig Two Graves." And it's totally in keeping with Travis' moribund song tradition (remember
"Three Wooden Crosses"?). Sometimes nothing can make you feel better than the saddest of sad, but inspirational, songs.
•
Patty Loveless reminds one and all that country music is sometimes very rich, indeed. Her Sweet Dreams is a stunning collection.
•
Watching new duo Dailey & Vincent inject fresh energy into bluegrass music.
• Shooter Jennings' heartfelt tribute to his father with the album Waylon Forever. In finishing some of his father's incomplete tracks
with his own band, the .357s, Shooter brought some of Waylon's unfinished legacy into the modern age.
• Hank Williams still rules. His Mother's Best radio recordings from 1951 sound crisp and relevant and make it seem like he's still around.
•
Lee Ann Womack comes back with a total smack-down album, Call Me Crazy, that reminds people of what a great singer she can be.
•
The Musicians Union induction awards show in Nashville. Encountering the likes of Percy Sledge, Keith Richards, Booker T.
and Kid Rock in the hallways of the Schermerhorn is not something you do every night.
• Bob Dylan's show on satellite radio. Who knew he could be so corny and funny? And of course music-savvy, in a deep-catalog way.
•
Roger Alan Wade's video, "The Last Time I Saw Waylon Jennings," on the
CMT.com blog. It's not polished and slick. But it is incredibly from the heart and rings true for two or three generations
of staunch Waylon fans. This is the way great country used to sound. Good for Johnny Knoxville to produce this.

“It’s a shame the flame must melt the candle to survive,
And the train must leave the station to survive,
The honeybee leads the thieves back to the hive,
What’s killin’ me is barely keeping me alive.”
Those lyrics are from a song called “10,000 Candles” by my cousin, country singer Roger Alan Wade. He wrote those lyrics and he earned those lyrics the hard way. Thirty years of “what’s killin’ me is barely
keeping me alive” really did almost kill him, and 168 days ago Rog’ entered rehab and has been clean ever since.
Being clear and present has done cuz’ nice too. He has got a new album out called Stoned Traveler and it’s consistently in the top ten on the Amazon country charts. He is also touring the US for the first time ever.
My girlfriend and I got to catch him in Austin and he received a standing ovation his first night at the Saxon pub. I almost
cried. Actually, I think I did. Rog’ has been at it for over three decades and to see everything coming together for
him now means more to me and my family than I can express in words. My cousin is drenched in talent and the truth. He once
remarked, “All you want out of a drug dealer or an artist is honesty,” and his music is honest. Thank god he is
no longer concerned with the veracity of the aforementioned drug dealer. And thank god for the new life and momentum he now
has. In honor of my cousin, his music, and the sleep deprived angels that are watching over him, today’s show will be
called “No Bourbon, No Scotch, and No Beer.” Roger, I love you and I am more proud of you than you will ever know.
Onward and forward and love.
Your Cousin, PJ (can’t sign Knoxville to rog’)
P.S. I want to thank Dale Watson for coming to his show in Austin at the Saxon pub and for inviting Rog’ to sing
onstage with him at the Broken Spoke afterwards. What a grand, sweet blessing Dale, thanks so much. Also, I want to thank
Connie and Amy Nelson for being so kind period. And I would like to really thank them for being so kind to Roger and helping
him get those shows in Austin. Thanks for coming to the shows, too, Connie. Dale, Connie, and Amy, you opened your heart up
to Rog’ and helped open Austin’s eyes to his music in the process. As Ernest Tubb would say, “Thanks, thanks
a lot.”

Stardum Spotlight: Roger Alan Wade
December 4, 2008
Roger Alan Wade, Singer, Songwriter, Father…..American. Just the fact that the entire country doesn’t know R.A.W’s name amazes me. This is a man
who has worked on songs for the likes of Hank Williams Jr. and Johnny Cash. Roger Alan Wade
released his first Full Length album (All Likkered Up) back in 2005 on Knoxville records. If Johnny Knoxville is the
first name that hit your head after you heard that then you’ve heard Roger Alan Wade, and
if you’ve ever watched Jackass you’ve heard Roger Alan Wade. Now back to All
Likkered up. The album was an underground classic both in the country and the comedy genre. The album featured hits such
as “Poontang“, “BB Gun“, “If you’re gunna be dumb“, and the
title track “All Likkered Up” After this album was released R.A.W had
one show in the L.A. county area at Safari Sam’s in Hollywood which we were lucky enough to attend. He performed for
the Jackass number 2 premiere party. The man sounds just as good live as he does on the album. From there on we were all waiting
in anticipation for his next album “Stoned Traveler” which would be released on Feb. 5th 2008. Needless
to say at midnight on Feb. 4th the album was downloaded (Legally) off iTunes. After listening to the first few songs off the
album (”Stoned Traveler” and “D-R-U-N-K“) We figured it was going to be an album of
comedic songs just like “All Likkered Up”. Well we were wrong, the album did have some comedic lyrics hitting
on “southern living” but the songs had a more serious tone to it which we accept with open arms. Roger
Alan Wade is an amazing musician and Stardum believes that his most recent album just cements that statement as truth.
To anyone who enjoys country or folk music and to anyone who has an open mind, check out R.A.W.
Buy his album’s, request him on the radio and do what you have to do to make his name known nation wide. I’m going
to leave you now with a lyric from R.A.W’s “Cohare Cohares”
“ah cohare cohares el tora a ora las cocas you f*** with the bull you’ll get the horns“

So, who exactly is Roger Alan Wade?
He is a singer, songwriter and
a comedian who can perform acoustically for four hours without a break and leave his audience wanting more. Or he can belt
'em out in a band with the best of them. He is a writer who just loves to write, a singer who just loves to sing and a person
with a deep soul and a big heart.
That's what makes Roger Alan Wade so special.

Originality is the essence of both the singing and writing of this soft-spoken, gentle-mannered six footer. He brings a unique
tenderness to his songs whether they be southern rock or ballads. His ability to write from the heart or crack jokes until
you want to cry speaks to his amazing versatility. His songs have been recorded by some of country music's greats, such as
Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Confederate Railroad and Hank Williams, Jr. (including the #1 hit
"Country State of Mine," written by Roger and originally named "Country State of Mind.")
Roger captures the rural south
flawlessly, as result of his Kentucky roots and Tennessee upbringing. He has hundreds of songs under his belt as a writer,
years of honky-tonk performing experience (with and without bands) and a commanding personal and stage presence. In addition
to his numerous recordings, he has opened for and performed with artists as diverse as Hank, Jr., Steve Earle, Nicolette Larson,
Mickey Gilley, the Allman Brothers and Guy Clark.
You are as likely to find Roger in a library as a bar. His appetite
for literature is satisfied by the likes of Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, James Joyce, Marcel Proust, T. S. Eliot and John
Steinbeck. His diverse musical influences include Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons, Robert Johnson, Hank Williams and Charlie Parker.
